Home for the Holidays

Make your home ready for the holidays with easy, affordable decor updates

(ARA) - Welcoming friends and family into your home is one of the best ways to celebrate the season. One of the keys
to making visitors feel right at home is to be a happy host. So, do yourself - and your guests - a favor and put a little effort into
getting your home holiday houseguest perfect.

Since your house will be full with visitors over the holidays, go beyond cleaning and organizing. Adding touches of festive decor
will create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and if there are do-it-yourself projects still on the to-do list, now is the best time to finish
them. Not only will your home look fresh and revived to you, but your guests will certainly notice your home's updated appearance.

To get your home ready for hosting holiday guests, follow this room-by-room checklist. Whether you want to tackle one room at a
time or do it all at once, breaking down your tasks can make the process much easier.

The kitchen

As the central hub of the home, guests will naturally congregate in the kitchen, so spend time making small, budget-friendly
updates to make the space more comfortable, for both chef and audience.

* A fresh palette: Make an update that will instantly refresh your space with a new paint color. Be empowered to experiment
with a bold, food-inspired hue such as coffee date by allen + roth at Lowe's. With its limited wall space, the kitchen makes an
ideal place to use a bolder hue for just the right pop of color.
* Details matter: Clear the clutter and make room for all the chef's necessities in your kitchen, making the chef's job easier.
Add updated cabinet and drawer pulls as well as a touch-faucet that offers style and ease of use.

The living room

You'll be spending a lot of time in your living spaces with your guests, so make sure they're decorated in festive spirit and
ready to accommodate a crowd.

* Layer lighting: Don't just rely on overhead fixtures. Adding softer ambient light (like wall sconces), task lighting (under-cabinet
lights or desk lamps) and accent lighting (such as art lighting or candles) will help set your desired mood.
* Decor details: The mantel is a perfect focal point for holiday decorating. Add some atmospheric scent, color and texture with fresh
evergreen garlands and holiday plants. Spray paint terracotta pots silver and gold and plant amaryllis, Christmas rose or rosemary.
Or, personalize your display by placing family photos of holidays past and treasured heirlooms over the fireplace, where everyone
can see them.

Guest rooms

Both guest bedrooms and bathrooms should be given extra special attention when hosting overnight holiday visitors. Consider
everything a guest might need and then add some little extras to make their experience even better.

* Practical fixes: For your guest bedroom, adding portable lighting like small table lamps will make the room seem friendlier when
added to overhead lighting and will keep guests from running across the room in the dark after switching off the lights. Adding a
decorative mirror is a much-appreciated touch and takes little effort.
* Comforts of home: Ensure that your guest rooms, particularly the bathrooms, make visitors of all ages feel comfortable. Update
your bathroom hardware with stylish faucets, knobs and even grab bars to ensure no guests slip or fall when entering and exiting
the shower. New products, like a dual towel rod and grab bar by Moen, offers both style and function to make your guests feel at home.

As important as it is for your guests to be comfortable at your home during the holidays, it should be a relaxing place for you too,
and one that you can enjoy long after the holiday season. By preparing your home well ahead of time, you'll be able to focus on
enjoying the holidays with your family and friends.

Host a Holiday Greeting Card Party

We all have too many things on our list to do this time of year, so why not make a tedious task more fun and catch up with your
girlfriends at the same time
? This season, throw a Holiday Greetings party! Invite everyone to your place and provide a comfortable
space to address and sign their Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa cards. You can easily throw this party together and have it
next week, leaving you plenty of time to mail those cards out.

Setting and Setup
This is an easy party to set up. You’ll want to make sure everyone has enough tabletop space to comfortably write their cards.
Holiday music is a must–especially if you can come up with something a little different. Try the
Great Women of Christmas CD for
some classic holiday cheer by some powerful women.
A Very Special Christmas Vol. 1 is classic pop fun, and A Charlie Brown Christmas
brings a moody instrumental flair to your party. But since holiday music selections are endless, and run the gamut from celtic to swing to punk,
get what you and your friends like. Don’t forget to light a fire in the fireplace, or some candles to add a holiday glow.
Simmer a pot of cinnamon sticks on the stove for a decidedly welcoming atmosphere.

Invitations
You’ll want to make sure your invitation gets noticed in the flurry of holiday mail. So instead of a typical holiday invitation, do
something a little different. Buy small holiday memo pads at the dollar store, and write the invitation details on the first page.
Place the pad in an envelope and mail for a invitation that comes in handy too.  Or, find the girliest pink invitation you can and
send that–it will really stand out among the reds, greens, silvers and blues. On the invitation, remind your girlfriends to bring
their invitations, address book, stamps, address labels, and a writing instrument. (If you are really last-minute, just call or use
Evite.)
Food and Drink
Whatever you serve, make sure you have some warm offerings to match the warm feelings of the season. A simple supper of
soup and bread would be divine. Or, ask each girlfriend to bring a warm appetizer. Hot chocolate (spiked with peppermint schnapps?)
or apple cider, mulled wine, or coffee drinks are all apropros.

Making Connections
As you work on your cards, you’ll no doubt be catching up on all the latest girlfriend news. But during conversation lulls,
try some of these conversation starters –or make up some of your own. You’ll learn some interesting tidbits about your gal pals!
  • Who has been on your holiday card list the longest?
  • Who lives the farthest away on your list?
  • When did you first start sending your own holiday cards?
  • How do you display holiday cards?
  • What is your favorite holiday song?
  • What is your most cherished holiday decoration?
  • What is your favorite holiday tradition?
  • What do you hate about the holidays?
  • What is your most memorable holiday gift?
  • Do you re-use gift bags? Wrapping paper?
Party Favors
The "write" favor for this party would be a special pen. Purchase a nice selection at a party supply or card store, choosing either
a holiday theme or a feminine one.  Let your guests pick out one to use at the party (if desired) and take home.

There-wasn’t that simple? You got your cards done and had fun. What your girlfriends will remember is not how clean your
house was, or how sophisticated your appetizers were, but that you gave them a warm welcome and an opportunity to enjoy
each other, away from the pressures of the holiday season.

Cheers!

Affordable mini makeovers for the Holidays

(ARA) - The season for indoor gatherings has arrived and everyone is looking for ways to bring the excitement into their
homes. With tighter budgets available for remodeling, choosing paint for your mini-make over projects may be the smartest
way to "go new."

Here are the top ways you can mini-makeover your kitchen:
* Refinish countertops: An overwhelming percentage of U.S. homeowners want granite tops because of their natural elegance,
but unfortunately, the huge remodeling commitment and high price for granite results in buyer hesitation. Now you can paint
over your outdated countertops with granite paint. Giani Granite provides countertop paint kits that include everything you
need to refinish your counters, reviving your outdated kitchen.
* Paint stainless: Old and outdated appliances are a large eyesore for many kitchens, but buying new is often financially
difficult. For those stuck in a pinch, try paint. Thomas' Liquid Stainless Steel is made with 100 percent stainless steel in an
automotive grade, clear resin. You no longer need to replace refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and cabinet hardware with
expensive new stainless steel to have a modern look. Find stainless steel paint options at liquidstainlesssteel.com.
* Paint cabinets and trim: New touches to your kitchen can be applied with finishing paint on dingy cabinets, shelving, doors,
trim and woodwork. Painting over outdated polyurethane and varnish surfaces is now possible without using a primer. Using a
tough yet smooth finishing paint is especially important for these smaller - often overlooked - accents that make or break the
final look of a kitchen.
* Floor finishing: Cork and plywood flooring are inexpensive options and can be cut for a tiled or plank look. These low-cost
flooring alternatives offer plenty of personalization options such as painting, staining, whitewashing, stenciling or simply
coating with polyurethane to make the floor unique in your home.

Using mini-makeover paint tips to update and change the looks of your home will have your seasonal
guests oohing and awing over how great it looks.

scrambling them slowly blending the spinach into the eggs.
3. When eggs are almost set, sprinkle in the feta. Continue scrambling slowly
allowing the cheese to melt slightly into the eggs. After about a minute, stir in
the tomatoes. Cook for just a few seconds longer, or until eggs are done to your
liking.
